-- Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was asked how he and wide receiver Cooper Kupp could possibly top their success from last season.

Stafford joked, "You can't sit there and go, 'Well, the only thing to do now is go for 2, yards and I'll throw for 7, That's unrealistic."

But offensive coordinator Liam Coen knows one of the Rams' offseason moves could not only make this offense more dangerous, but help Kupp as well.

He is one of the league's best receivers in the slot and at.

Slot vs. And really even that is inflating the importance of their outside passing game, as 20 of those pass attempts were screens or jet sweeps. With that self-imposed criterion in mind, King picked the right man. Diggs is one of three receivers since to have at least 75 targets and double-digit DVOA in both splits, joining Michael Thomas and Julio Jones. Playing inside will often see receivers matched up against nickel corners and safeties.

They'll have more room to run routes before the ball is thrown and to cut upfield after the ball has been caught.

And it's not really an issue of all receivers becoming less specialized; there were just about as many slot specialists in as there were in It's just that teams are becoming more and more willing to bring their studs inside as time has gone along.

The following table shows wide receiver target and performance splits in the slot and out wide in Those charting labels come from players' locations on the field regardless of the positioning of their teammates.

The size of the gap varies from year to year—it was at % incompared to just % in —but it has always been there. It's just not ideal for an entire offense to be designed around dinking-and-dunking even to very talented slot receivers, as the aDOT to Rams receivers in the slot was yards, third-lowest in the league. Stafford didn't throw during the offseason program as he recovers from a right elbow injury.

Woods was No. 11, while Kupp checked in at No. 6.

Here’s what Farrar wrote about Woods:

One of the more underappreciated route Rams slot receiver of his era, Woods has excelled for the Bills and Rams through his career, and with Cooper Kupp dealing with injuries last season, he became an invaluable slot target in Sean McVay’s offense — even when Jared Goff was dealing with accuracy and mechanical issues.

Will Gallup ever be more than a downfield boundary receiver? And remember, these are all wide receiver numbers; this isn't a case of Darren Waller throwing numbers out of whack.

For the first time in our charting, no qualifying wide receiver saw at least 80% of his targets when split out wide, and only 10 saw twice as many wide targets than slot targets. The Rams had a league-low yard aDOT on their passes to receivers split wide as they struggled to create big pass plays downfield.

That's not Kupp or Woods' fault; both are generally considered among the top slot receivers in the league.

He’s not a true slot receiver like Kupp is, but when he does line up there, he’s one of the toughest matchups in football.

Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire ranked the 11 best slot receivers in football and both Kupp and Woods made the list. Sean McVay's Rams basically lived in the slot, with % of their wideout passes going to players lined up inside. Twenty-eight different teams saw over half their passes go to slot receivers, with the Dolphins, Giants, Steelers, and Seahawks being the holdouts; none of them were under 47%.

We think it will be difficult to defend and it was obviously difficult to defend [Kupp] over the last few years and having the kind of guys that we had. Beasley has alternated negative and positive DVOAs out of the slot every year we have done this, so he has been far from consistent. You can see why Los Angeles would take the risk to bring in someone like Matthew Stafford; we'll discuss his numbers in a future article, but he has been significantly more willing and able to uncork the deep ball than Goff ever has.

The offense was designed to give young quarterback Jared Goff the same reads. Slot receiver wes welker has finally found a team willing to sign him.

With teams playing more and more nickel defensively, there are fewer big uglies in the middle of the field to jam lanes and hamper receivers. Only three players in NFL. The current number one receiver on the Rams roster is Cooper Kupp, and that is unlikely to change. The Rams' wide splits really stand out when you look at them—just 90 attempts all season long, or less than six a game.

Without Woods or Beckham -- at least to start the season -- there will be a need for another vertical threat opposite Jefferson.

While Robinson is capable of doing that himself -- he had receptions for 1, yards and six touchdowns in before suffering through an illness- and injury-plagued -- perhaps Coen and coach Sean McVay get creative, with Robinson and Kupp splitting that responsibility more than expected.

"He's one of those bigger receivers All aboard slots app has body control of a smaller guy," McVay said.

While they were the vanguards of the trend, they weren't alone; the Texans and Raiders also saw at least twice as many targets to "wide" receivers in the slot rather than split wide, while five more teams missed the mark by less than a dozen attempts. At first, you might assume that this is a result of a lack of a receiving tight end, but no; Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett combined for 50 slot targets themselves. He has really good details, both in the release game and at the top of the routes."

Robinson said he has already gotten a lot of help from Kupp, saying the pair is "always talking through those different things and really being very specific." Last season, the Rams ranked seventh in the NFL in Football Outsiders' passing DVOA.

Kupp and Woods will almost assuredly be near the top of the slot target list again inbut they'll ideally catch the ball a few steps further downfield.

The Jets also had a pair of wideouts with at least 80% of their targets in the slot in Jamison Crowder and Braxton Berrios, and now they're getting Mike LaFleur—another student of the Shanahan/McVay system—to call their plays. With so many more targets being charted as going to players in the slot, you can get an A.J. Brown leading the league in wide DYAR despite nearly 45% of his targets coming in the slot; there just aren't enough players hoovering up a disproportionate number of wide targets to fight off really good players who happen to play everywhere.

Brown's +% DVOA split wide was the best among players with at least half his targets split out wide, too, a significant change from when he had a +% DVOA difference in favor of slot targets as a rookie.

Hahaha. To have not one but two receivers with over slot/tight targets is an unprecedented outcome.

Jefferson had some big shoes to fill after 's trade, but I don't think the Vikings could have asked for anything more.

As usual, most of the biggest gaps between slot and wide DVOA come for someone with a tiny sample size in a split; we're not trying to imply that Greg Ward's struggles were a result of being poorly used. No, this is just a result of the Rams lining up narrowly and branching outwards from there. Evans was more situationally moved into the slot, and nearly every time he ended up inside, the ball was going his way. When we first ran this data in28 players were split out wide at least two-thirds of the time, but the idea Gold rush gus slot a receiver can or should just be stuck on the boundaries and left there is slowly fading from the league.

We have grouped targets from the traditional tight end spot in with slot Rams slot receiver because of their similarity, but that's not a huge impact on the data; there were only targets to wide receivers lined up tight, with Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Curtis Samuel being the only three to hit double digits.

Just Ram It Inside

Let's talk about the Rams in a little more detail, as having both Kupp and Woods top slot targets is incredible—and having them both hit negative numbers in DVOA is less than ideal.

And although the Rams traded Woods and haven't re-signed Beckham -- at least not yet -- Kupp said it's been "great" to work with Robinson.

"It's been so much fun to be able to collaborate with him," Kupp said. that big has a big thick cock. Guyton isn't a complete player at this point; he's someone you send deep and hope he burns his guy.

Now, to be fair, considering the speed Green showed last season, it's plausible he was asked to play inside and just couldn't make it there before the play clock expired; we'll see what Taylor's offense looks like without Green in

The other receiver in that boat was Michael Gallup, who has now ranked first, second, and second in his split-wide percentage in his three years in the league.

A receiver on one side of the formation who was a few feet away from the offensive line was considered to be in the slot even if he was the widest receiver on that side. There are enough moving parts in the Jets' offense that making any proclamations about what they'll look like next year is a tough deal, but there'll be opportunity for increased slot production there in

Cole Beasley receiving an All-Pro vote last year raised eyebrows.

Expect an uptick in downfield routes for Woods and Kupp, which will open things up underneath, as well.

Neither player is seen as a true deep threat, but with their route-running ability and quickness, they should make more plays on intermediate and deep passes this season.

Farrar notes that Kupp caught 62 passes on 82 targets from the slot, totaling yards on those receptions. A note to defenses playing the Buccaneers in when Evans shifts inside, it's because the Buccaneers have a play called to get him matched up against a lesser corner, and they are going to throw the ball to him.

Wide and Waning

While there were about two dozen receivers who mostly lived in the slot, there were only two who stuck out wide practically all the time.

Rashard Higgins' % DVOA in the slot led all players, and you could make an argument for Will Fuller's % slot DVOA on % slot usage as being impressive enough without hitting an arbitrary two-thirds threshold, but I would give Godwin the award for the most effective receiver who primarily played in the slot in Had he not missed a quarter of the season with a few small injuries, he may well have caught Beasley in DYAR.

Both were better in the slot, as anticipated, but they certainly didn't have a problem when asked to play split out wide, either. You can come up with a number of potential causes to explain this.

It makes a certain degree of intuitive sense that, all else being equal, receivers might have an easier time lined up inside than isolated out on the edge.

And NFL teams have really come around to this too. An outside receiver could slide into the slot, and vice versa. With how often teams have three wideouts on the field in today’s NFL, Rams slot receiver receivers have become more important and valuable than ever.

Can he repeat that in ? Guyton only caught 38% of the passes sent to him out wide, compared to 62% in Video poker machine slot machines slot. Peter King explained his vote, saying that if he had to pick three receivers, he wanted to make sure Rams slot receiver of them was primarily a slot guy.

It's not a situation like a Stefon Diggs or a Davante Adams who were used all over the field and were great everywhere. Our annual look at receiving performance in and of the slot kicks off with the receivers. And with only a % difference between his slot and wide DVOAs, it didn't matter where Diggs lined up in —he was dominant everywhere. I'm such a fucking fool. Godwin and Mike Evans were the only two players to repeat top slot DYAR finishes from as Arians has always excelled using receivers out of the slot, Godwin just being the latest in a line that includes Larry Fitzgerald, Reggie Wayne, and Hines Ward.

Evans' top finish is interesting in and of itself as he has been mostly split wide year-in and year-out.

Much of this data appears in Football Outsiders Almanac (available now!), and we're going to spend the next couple of weeks breaking down these splits, starting today with wide receivers.

We have been recording this data sinceand we have noted that throwing to the slot has consistently produced better results than throwing outside.

InWoods caught 50 of 66 slot targets for yards and four touchdowns; one can only imagine how he’ll fare when Matthew Stafford is throwing him passes as opposed to Goff.

Woods’ production should only increase with Stafford under center, giving the Rams a more aggressive and accurate quarterback. Rashard Higgins' % wide DVOA was the most for any player with at least two-thirds of his targets out wide, for what it's worth.

Odds and Ends

Stefon Diggs comes out as the most balanced receiver—the only one with at least 75 targets in both splits, and the only one above DYAR both wide and in the slot.

That allows Kupp and Woods to run more complete route trees without being limited by the sideline. He was 10th in DVOA, sure, but an All-Pro? All the playcallers from that offensive tree use narrow formations to some extent, but McVay takes the cake. And thanks to their versatility, there’s a wealth of combinations for Sean McVay to use.

Did Cole Beasley earn his All-Pro vote?

LA Rams: Is Cooper Kupp an NFL Top-Five WR?

What characteristics classify the greatest wide receiver?  Is it their big-play ability?

Chargers Slot Receiver

The Chargers have a top-five NFL wide receiver corps Fantasy Draft Kit Published: Jul 29, at AMThe San Diego Chargers quite clearly have one of the five best wide receiver corps in the NFL. The conversation starts with Keenan Allen, who in his third NFL season established himself as a premier player at his position. Before going down in Week 8 with a freak kidney injury, Allen was on pace to finish with catches and over 1, receiving yards. He completely took over games against the Packers and Lions, catching a combined percent of his targets in those two weeks. Losing Allen proved too much for the Chargers offense to withstand. Philip Rivers' yard-per-attempt dropped from to , and his touchdowns-per-game from to after Allen went down for the remainder of the season. The third-round draft pick out of Cal established himself as a true difference maker in Keenan Allen doesn't check all the boxes of the prototypical No. 1 receiver. He doesn't have the size-speed combination of Julio Jones, the overwhelming physicality of Dez Bryant or the proclivity for the fantastic catch like Odell Beckham. It doesn't matter. Allen succeeds with his elite precise route-running and detailed understanding of the technical aspects of the game. Reception Perception is a methodology I developed to help quantify a wide receiver's performance as a route-runner. The system samples eight games out of a game NFL season to provide a picture of both how a team uses the receiver and how successful he is at getting open versus coverage. The methodology is the ideal way to present just how proficient a wideout Keenan Allen is. In Keenan Allen's Reception Perception sample percent of his routes were either slants, curls or posts. Last season San Diego made excellent use of the short to intermediate passing game. Allen was the primary driving force of the aerial assault, consistently thumping defenses with those crossing patterns. Given Philip Rivers' strength as an accurate passer, it makes great sense for the Chargers to pick teams apart in the short game. Of course, that "death by a thousand paper cuts" approach only truly works if you have an elite separator to funnel the targets through. The step forward Keenan Allen took last year solidified that he can indeed be that player to carry the passing attack. Allen posted those elite-level scores on the routes he ran most often. His success rates on slant () and curl routes () are within the 90th percentile of NFL scores charted over the last three seasons. Allen's 80 percent success rate on post routes is also a top-notch score. Some of that assigned route portfolio causes observers to label Keenan Allen a possession receiver, glorified slot or some other seemingly pejorative term. However, several of his Reception Perception metrics strongly rebuke that idea. His percent overall success rate vs. man coverage is the third best score recorded in Reception Perception history, behind only Odell Beckham () and Antonio Brown (). When you think of slot receivers and these other possession archetypes, defeating tight physical coverage and plucking the ball in traffic don't fit the mold. Allen is adept at both skills with a percent success rate vs. press and a sterling contested catch conversion rate. Those aren't numbers of a volume-inflated receiver, those are numbers of a true anchoring No. 1 receiver. Keenan Allen was on pace for receptions and over 1, receiving yards last season before going down with that freak kidney injury. He was in the middle of his true breakout and reputation establishing season in after a great rookie campaign followed by a slower sophomore year. With Allen back in action, look for him to produce right up there with the top receivers in He's an excellent value in the second-round of fantasy drafts and will likely produce numbers akin to a first-round wideout when all is said and done. You can tell the Chargers have a preferred type at the receiver position. Steve Johnson joined the team in free agency last year and he plays the game in a similar style to Allen. Johnson came to Chargers as an under the radar addition but carried a strong Reception Perception profile. The veteran was off to solid start as the primary slot receiver in San Diego with 14 catches, yards and two touchdowns on just 17 targets in the first three weeks.

Maybe their speed and agility? Could it be their yards after the catch? Can it be their route running and knowledge of the defensive coverage? In my opinion, all those questions play a factor in the ultimate wide receiver.

Currently, there are 5 top wide receivers in the NFL that have all of those characteristics and one of them is on the LA Rams roster. His name Chance games online Cooper Kupp or other fans might know him as Mr.

Super Bowl MVP. All sports fans love a good underdog story and Cooper Kupp&#;s career is the perfect script.  Cooper Kupp was drafted by the LA Rams in the third round, 69th overall, back in the NFL draft.

After finishing his collegiate career at Eastern Washington, many sports fans didn&#;t think much of Kupp going into the NFL.

Well, I guess he proved all the nonbelievers wrong by winning the Super Bowl LVI MVP. To all those doubters, I am here to tell you that Cooper Kupp is currently a top 5 wide receiver in the NFL.

Ranking Process

A lot of sportswriters have different categories on how they rank certain positions in football. I believe the wide receiver position is one of the toughest groups to rank.

rams receivers 2021 stats

There are so many high-quality wide receivers in the NFL it&#;s tough to narrow it down. For this purpose, my ranking system is simple. I will not factor in the ability to block, run a jet sweep, or line up in the backfield. I will focus exclusively on the ability of the wide receiver to line up outside of an offensive tackle and make plays.

My top 5 wide receivers need to have the following characteristics, route running, great hands, consistent production, and x-factor ability on the field.

Kupp and the rest of the players listed below cover all of those categories. I even try to ignore the quality of the quarterback making the throws, and focus upon the talent of the wide receiver alone.

&#; Top 5 WR

  1. DeAndre Hopkins (#10 Arizona Cardinals)
  2. Davante Adams (#17 Green Bay Packers)
  3. Cooper Kupp (#10 Los Angeles Rams)
  4. Tyreek Hill (#10 Kansas City Chiefs)
  5. Justin Jefferson (#18 Minnesota Vikings)

1.

DeAndre Hopkins

Why would I consider DeAndre Hopkins my number one ranked NFL WR? Easy, he is a one-man show when it comes to the Arizona Cardinals&#; offense. Last year, Hopkins was injury-prone the whole year, so his stats don&#;t jump off the page. According to ESPN, when Hopkins was on the field the Cardinals&#; offense was average points a game, and when Hopkins was injured, the offense only averaged points a game. Those stats right there jump off the page.

When Hopkins got hurt in week 14 against the LA Rams, Rams slot receiver Cardinals saw their Super Bowl hopes quickly die.

Football is a team sport, but when the number one ranked WR goes down you know your offense is going to crumble. Hopkins finished with 42 catches yards and 8 touchdowns. Look for Hopkins to have a huge bounce-back year in

2. Brian slots 2021 Adams

How good is Davante Adams without Aaron Rodgers? That question is yet to be answered and it might happen sooner rather than later.

Of course, I believe Adams is an incredible wide receiver, that is why I have him ranked number 2 overall.  Aaron Rodgers can make any wide receiver look like a Jerry Rice, but can Adams do it without his MVP QB? I believe the difference between Hopkins and Adams is that question right there.

For the majority of Hopkins&#;s career, he always has a below-average quarterback, but still finds a way to stand out above the rest.

During the season, I took a close eye on Adams and watched him every game. What convinced me that he was ranked two overall was the way opposing coaches gameplan against him.

During the Baltimore Ravens game, the Ravens TRIPLED-teamed him and still found a way to get open.  According to ESPN, Adams finished with catches 1, yards, and 11 touchdowns.

 3. Cooper Kupp

Where does the Super Bowl LVI MVP rank amongst the best NFL wide receiver? In my opinion, Cooper Kupp is ranked 3rd overall.

According to ESPN, Kupp finished with catches, 1, yards, and 16 touchdowns last year. Kupp&#;s stats are incredible and what makes him stand out against the rest is his unbelievable route running. His route running is perfect, and he can line up anywhere on the field.

Kupp is so explosive, the Rams can put him in the slot, out wide, at tight end, and running back.

No matter where he is on the field, he just knows how to make big plays. Kupp is a target magnet, and he almost had a touchdown a game. That stat right there shows how reliable Kupp is on the field.

Kupp has an excellent supporting staff around him, like OBJ, Robert Woods, and Tyler Higbee, and still finds a way to go above and beyond.

4. Tyreek Hill

Hill, like Free slots 99 com, has the same scenario. How good is Tyreek Hill without Patrick Mahomes? Hill is by far the most electrifying player in the NFL.

He is arguable the fastest wide receiver in the NFL. Even when you double-team Hill, he still is a big-play threat. According to CBS Sports, Hill has the second most 25+ yard receptions in his first 84 games, only 12 less than Randy Moss.

Hill has only Rams slot receiver in the league for less than 6 years and is on pace to be a Hall of Famer. According to ESPN, inHill ranked 3rd with catches, 7th with yards, and 9th with 9 touchdowns.

If he can continue this pace, he will shatter all the records set by the previous Hall of Famers. Of course, the big question is can he perform like this without Mahomes? I guess only time can time.

5. Justin Jefferson

I&#;m not going to lie; Justin Jefferson is my favorite young wide receiver.

InJefferson broke the NFL rookie record with receiving yards.  With only two years in the league, I truly believe he will be the number one ranked wide receiver shortly. In his rookie year, he had the 3rd highest receiving yards amongst wide receivers.

Last year, Jefferson finished 4th with catches, 2nd with yards, and 6th with 10 touchdowns. Those stats are amazing considering the Vikings are a run-heavy team. Also, what is amazing about those stats is that Adam Thielen was hurt most of the year, leaving Jefferson double-teamed for the majority of the game.

Jefferson has put himself into the elite category with only two seasons under his belt.

Let the debate begin

It&#;s tough to say who else belongs in this elite category amongst wide receivers, but I do know that LA Rams Cooper Kupp belongs there. When Kupp tore his ACL back in Novemberhe came back the season better than ever.

rams best receiver 2021

Since entering the league inKupp has gotten better and better each year.

Kupp puts up consistent stats no matter who plays quarterback and he is always reliable. Kupp deserves to be amongst the top 5 greatest active wide receivers in the NFL today, and it would be difficult to convince me otherwise.
